10 of 10 - Widlene Alexis Earle

For my last entry in this mini-series, I thought I would take it back to basics.

Widlene.

One story.

One gesture.

You decide.

If you know any 14 year old girls, you will know that they are a very peculiar breed of human being. Widlene is no different. She loves listening to music, posting on Instagram and hanging out with her friends. She also loves her phone.

She actually loves it so much that she has been saving money to try and get herself an upgrade to one with a better camera. For someone saving money, Christmas can be a gold mine, especially when most of your family lives in another country. Sure enough, by Christmas Day, Widlene was counting all of her Christmas money and what she had earned from babysitting her little brother. I could see her doing the math in her head. She was determined not to waste any of her loot on useless items but rather make sure that every peso went toward her ultimate goal.

Then it happened.

Around December 27th, Widlene got a serious look in her eye and asked if she could talk to me.

"Daddy," she began. "I need your help with something."

"Sure thing," I replied.

"I want to buy a bicycle for John Carlos."

John Carlos is Widlene's nephew. Widlene and her sister are close and she absolutely adores her little 7 year old nephew and he is enamored with her.

"I want to buy a bicycle for John Carlos. So...I need a ride to the store and I am not sure if I have enough money."

I didn't know what to say. I knew that she wanted that latest and greatest iPhone and I knew that she had been saving. Now my heart was exploding with pride. This young lady was prepared to put her goals aside to put a smile on another human's face.

The next day, we went to the store and she got him that bike. It was somewhere around $120 and she was able to cover it all. I stood beside her as she walked that neon green BMX bike into her sister's house and there was no way I was containing my emotions. His face lit up as he threw his arms around his auntie and his hero.

I have showed you a clear picture of who Ahmed Hussen is.

Now you know who Widlene Earle is.

Ask yourself.... who is the real Canadian?
